Our story starts in 2009 when I moved to Marina Del Rey, CA from Dallas, TX to make my dreams of living on the West Coast a reality. I was in the automotive industry where I met my now husband, Jeff. We started our journey in Woodland Hills, where he grew up. A couple of years into it, we realized that we wanted to move to Huntington Beach, open a business together and have some fun.
We started looking for properties to purchase in the area, but the perfect home was not coming across our path. Years went by and the properties kept getting more expensive to renovate. Single family homes were starting in the million dollar range. We decided to take matters into our own hands in 2020 and buy a vacant plot to build from the ground up.
An amateur venture to say the least, but the perfect house does exist when you build it yourself. The process has been a very steep learning curve. We tried to push our architectural plans to be finalized within four months. Unfortunately, the pandemic kept being blamed for the delays and us not understanding the process continued to push our timeline behind. Set backs in the plans caused us to lose our general contractor which led to us interviewing new ones. Six months after we had last spoken to our general contractor, he offered to take our project on again as he had finished up some other homes and could fit our house into the schedule.
Fast forward to October 2021 our general contractor was ready to start the process. When he asked for the permits we found out they we never pulled. We had to rewind and work through the process again. Another learning curve, March of 2022, we received all of the proper permits, updated plans, signatures, and a partridge in a pear tree to get this house going. We finally broke ground in June of 2022. Of course, nothing can go smoothly as we lost the funding for the project. All construction stopped and we were back to square one in the loan process. The new funding was able to be secured a few months later and construction started in October 2022.
The one motivator this whole time has been the process of designing the visuals for the interior and exterior of this house. One we design and have control of the look and feel of where we live. This house is our future and our story will forever be changing.
